Robin Abcarian: The problematic use of ‘problematic’ to shut down people with whom we disagree

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:34:42 GMT

My first unpleasant encounter with the current meaning of the word “problematic” occurred a couple of years ago.I was mingling with some 20- and 30-somethings at an outdoor birthday party in San Francisco. It was a bit chilly, as San Francisco usually is, but a distinct and quite different chill fell over my little conversation group as we began to discuss Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder,” the hilarious (in my opinion) movie that spoofed Hollywood careerism and war movies.I don’t remember why, exactly, we were talking about a film that came out in 2008. But all these years later, I said, I was still laughing at Tom’s Cruise surprising role as fat-fingered, balding studio boss Les Grossman, a filthy-mouthed bully who — it was rumored — was based on the producer Scott Rudin and/or Harvey Weinstein, legendary industry monsters who both happen to be Jewish. One woman looked at me and said, “That role was problematic.”“...

Broncos Roundtable: Defining success for Sean Payton’s first Denver team in 2023

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:34:42 GMT

Parker Gabriel, Broncos reporter: The roundtable is back. So back. And so is the NFL season, y’all. Can you believe it’s Week 1 already? In 18 short weeks, it will be January and we’ll all be headlong into another coaching sear— actually, check that. Probably not. Never say never, but even in a season that seems at the start to have a wide variety of potential outcomes, that would be a shocker. Speaking of outcomes, though, what makes for a successful first year for head coach Sean Payton? I’m saying it’s got to include the postseason. There’s a difference between having a successful season and a productive one. Maybe Denver could go 8-9, get Russell Wilson back on track to some degree and come up short of the postseason because the roster just doesn’t quite hold up to the NFL’s grinding attrition. That could be a productive year that sets up a promising 2024. But the success stamp, given the parity in the league, doesn’t get app...

Landlords start nickel-and-diming tenants with fees

It's already very expensive to rent in a hot housing market like Southern California. Now landlords have found a way to make things even worse.A growing number of property owners and managers are hitting tenants with extra fees each month -- a nickel-and-diming of people that the airlines, for one, have made a core aspect of their business model. It's been common for years for landlords to charge more for a parking space or having a pet.The new fees being levied -- which might run an additional $5 or $10 each -- cover a wide range of once-gratis services, including trash pickup, pest control, use of a mailbox and routine maintenance requests."A lot of this stuff used to just be called 'rent,'" Mike Vraa, a Minnesota tenant attorney, told the Wall Street Journal. Now, apparently, it's gravy.Just as airlines once doled out pillows, blankets and other amenities as a free service, now these goodies are a revenue source.Landlords, many of whom faced financial challenges during the pandemic...
